Step back in time and experience the golden age of South Australian rail with this meticulously crafted 1/87 scale HO gauge model of the iconic South Australian Railways Country Passenger Cars! Between 1936 and 1941, 36 steel-bodied cars rolled off the line, and this model captures the essence of the final 24 – a fleet of elegant, similar-looking trains that served the state’s rural heartland.
Originally adorned in a striking Hawthorn green with cream roofs, these versatile vehicles saw service throughout the 1950s and 60s, before a progressive repaint into the vibrant Regal Red and Silver to match the latest country stock. The model reflects this evolution, offering you the choice between the original 8-vent roof style or the later, more streamlined 13-vent design.
These weren't just any trains – 16 were designated the 700-715 series, proudly serving as Second Class centre aisle cars, while 4 were Composite class (750-753) and 4 were First Class (780-783). And, mirroring the actual fleet, the model includes the option for original Beclawat frameless windows or later Wahner framed half-drop windows.
But the story doesn’t end there! These trains embarked on adventures across the state and beyond. Four cars were even transferred to standard gauge to connect Broken Hill and Peterborough, and several later found work with Victorian Railways. You’ll even find them represented with Steam Ranger in South Australia, North Rivers Railroad with Ritz Rail in Northern NSW!
This Ready-to-Run model boasts incredible detail: a precisely tooled ABS plastic body, genuine Kadee scale head whisker couplers, and separately applied handrails and detail parts. With two window styles and three full interior options for each class – each with its own appropriate seat covering color – you can create the perfect representation of these historical locomotives. Minimum radius recommended: 18”. Let the journey begin!
