Maunsell's diagram 2652 Third Class Dining Saloons were built in 1927 to provide an area for Third Class passengers to make use of the kitchen services provided in First Class kitchen/dining coaches. The exterior of the coaches utilised the 'low-window' Maunsell styling, with ventilators above the windows and doors at each end which were gently recessed to accommodate their grab handles within gauging limits. Inside, each coach could accommodate sixty-four diners and two toilets were located at the end of the coach furthest away from the kitchen/dining First Coach.

Whereas a further 40 kitchen/dining Firsts were built to the same 'low-window' style from 1929 onwards, accompanying Third Class dining was felt to be better served by the new 'high-window' Open Third Saloons and as a consequence, from 1930, the six Third Class Restaurant Dining Saloons were reclassified as Open Thirds. In 1947 the six coaches received updated interiors, with four of the coaches becoming composite coaches and two becoming First Class Coaches. The four composite coaches, nos. 1365-1368, served on the South Western section of the railway network paired with diagram 2659 Kitchen & Buffet Cars.

SDS Models HO SAR 700 Passenger Cars – Detailed 2-Car Pack!
125.00
$
Step back in time and experience the golden age of Australian rail with this meticulously crafted South Australian Railways passenger car! Between 1936 and 1941, the South Australian Railways commissioned 36 stunning steel-bodied country passenger cars, the final 24 of which graced the tracks in 1940/41. These iconic vehicles, all sharing a consistent external appearance and length, represent a bygone era of reliable service and scenic journeys.
Initially, 16 cars were designated as “700 series” – vibrant Second Class centre aisle beauties, while four “750 series” cars offered a more luxurious Composite Class experience, and another four “780 series” provided First Class comfort. Imagine passengers settling into plush seats within these cars, enjoying the views rolling by!
Over the years, a subtle evolution transformed these cars. Starting in the mid-1950s, the classic frameless windows were gradually swapped for sleek, chrome-plated framed windows, a testament to adapting to changing needs. The original Hawthorn green and cream livery, accented with black roofs, was eventually replaced in the mid to late 1960s with the striking Regal Red and Silver, perfectly mirroring the newer country stock.
These versatile cars weren't confined to South Australia. Throughout the 70s and 80s, four cars were expertly transferred to standard gauge for service between Broken Hill and Peterborough, and later, several found a temporary home with the Victorian Railways. And the adventures didn’t stop there – these cars traveled across state lines, serving with West Coast Railway in Victoria, Steam Ranger in South Australia, North Rivers Railroad with Ritz Rail in Northern NSW.
**This Ready-to-Run 1/87 scale HO gauge model captures the essence of these remarkable vehicles, boasting:**
* **Exceptional Detail:** A precisely tooled ABS plastic body provides lasting durability and realistic appearance.
* **Authentic Features:** Genuine Kadee scale head whisker couplers and separately applied handrails and detail parts ensure unparalleled realism.
* **Multiple Configurations:** Choose from two iconic roof styles (8 vent or 13 vent) and two window styles (Beclawat frameless or Wahner framed) for ultimate customization.
* **Rich Interior Options:** Select from three detailed interior options for each class, complete with appropriate seat covering colors to bring your layout to life!
**Minimum radius of 18” recommended. Bring a piece of Australian railway history into your collection today!**
